About Surbiton HC (m)
Surbiton – the most recent English champions – are looking forward to their fifth EHL campaign and an opening round date with Saint Germain.
It comes following a dramatic October RANKING CUP performance when they drew with KHC Dragons in normal time but missed out on progression to the 5th place playoff in a shoot-out.
The 2019/20 EHL campaign proved an especially frustrating one for the London club as they were denied a FINAL12 shot by the Covid-19 pandemic. They had impressed with a big 5-2 win over Real Club de Polo and a 4-1 victory over Dinamo Kazan in October 2019 to move through to the next phase only for the season to be called to a halt.
Since then, there have been plenty of changes. Welsh corner gun Gareth Furlong has been signed up following his spell with Tilburg while Adam Buckle, Nick Park, Ben Park and Ben Stevenson are other new additions.
They join a strong panel with Olympians Tom Sorsby and James Gall joined by fellow internationals Luke Taylor, David Goodfield – an EHL medalist with Harvestehuder THC – Jonty Griffiths and Scotland’s Jamie Golden. Nick Park has also been a recent addition to the international fold.
But, like a lot of GB’s big players, Europe has come calling for top scorer Alan Forsyth (HGC), Zach Wallace (HGC) and Brendan Creed (Beerschot) while James Royce went to Australia.
Domestically, they have a chance of landing a European spot on the last day of the regular season following a 5-1 win over Wimbledon last Saturday. Wimbledon are two points above them with one game each to play – Surbiton will face Hampstead & Westminster while Wimbledon go to champions Old Georgians.
Luke Taylor top the Londonders’ scoring charts with 20 goals this term.
