About Gantoise HC
Gantoise will become the first Belgian women’s club to play in the Euro Hockey League when they take on Surbiton on Friday morning.
They earned the place themselves with their outstanding Euro Hockey Trophy success last October in Lille when they won five out of five games, scoring 23 times in the process with Ambre Ballenghien netting six times. It was enough to power Belgium up the EHL Rankings List and, as the 2020/21 champions, they were the direct beneficiaries.
That was just their third national title but they have been the outstanding side in the country once again this term. They have 61 points from a possible 63 to their name so far in the regular season and they are 14 points ahead of nearest rivals Dragons whom they beat 3-1 last weekend.
Ballenghien is one of the big stars of the team along with seasoned internationals Alix Gerniers and Barbara Nelen while Stephanie vanden Borre is their corner gun. Hélène Brasseur is another part of the Red Panthers’ rising force and they have no fear in handing teenagers key roles such as Juliette Staelens, Marina Makhotkina and Noe Schruers who were all 18 or under when playing a full role last October.
Lara Oviedo (Italy by way of Argentina) and Delfina Gaspari (France) bring outside international experience while top scorer Emilie Sinia – now 36 – make for a really well-rounded panel. Sinia has 21 Belgian league goals to her name.
