About Railway Union HC
Railway Union will play in their first Euro Hockey League event having won Ireland’s EY Champions Trophy last season with the very last touch of the season.
Róisín Upton scored a last minute penalty stroke to defeat Loreto in the final and win the title and land this place in the FINAL12.
She is among a number of internationals in the side along with Katie Mullan with whom she won a World Cup silver medal in 2018 in London. They are joined by newly elected Irish captain Sarah Hawkshaw and indoor internationals like sisters Orla and Sarah Patton, Lily Lloyd and goalkeeper Emma Maloney.
On the indoor front, they finished in fifth place in February in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy in Porto.
While it is an EHL debut, the side does have a smattering of experience in Europe outdoors. Mullan played for both Club an der Alster and UCD as did the Pattons with the student club. Upton lined out for Catholic Institute in the Trophy two seasons ago.
They also have named the vastly experienced Emma Smyth and Kate Dillon in their panel. Both played in the EuroHockey Club Champions Cup back in 2014 when they finished in seventh place in Den Bosch.
Domestically, they are in second place in the EY Hockey League while they have also advanced to the semi-final of the Irish Senior Cup.
From the side that qualified them for this year’s EHL, twins Niamh and Michelle Carey are now playing Braxgata – their mother, Una McCarthy, is the Railway Union coach.
