About Wimbledon HC
Wimbledon face the new season with a much changed line-up from the one which qualified for the EHL, allowing the next generation to step forward and make their mark.
Preseason brought them to Germany where they took on Uhlenhorst Mülheim, Rot-Weiss Köln and Der Club an der Alster, something which gave them a real flavour of the standard required against top European clubs.
Karl Stagno brings considerable experience a sense of humour and a toughness that all the team enormously admire. He has coached numerous championship winning teams for Whitgift school both indoor and outdoor and is now in his seventh year at the club.
“We are delighted to be back in the EHL representing England,” he said of the challenge. “Last season, we competed in the indoor Euros in Vienna. We are looking to take some of this experience into the outdoor competition with a relatively new and exciting squad.”
In terms of the panel, they are delighted to welcome back Liam Ansell after a season away in Amsterdam. He boasts an impressive 70 combined caps for England and Great Britain, contributing to England’s bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and delivering standout performances at the 2018 World Cup and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Welsh international Fred Newbold is a former GB Under-21 captain, leading his squad to victory in the Sultan of Johor Cup, and he recently represented Wales in the 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup.
Alongside his hockey career, Fred is also pursuing an integrated Master’s in Biological Sciences at Oxford, and we’re excited to see him excel both on and off the pitch at Wimbledon.
Scottish international Joe McConnell joins from Teddington while Sam McCulloch arrives from Hale Hockey Club in Western Australia whom he helped win their Premier League last season.
James Vallely joins from Durham University where he has just graduated while Lewis “Nemo” Wilcher is a new addition from University of Exeter – he was previously coached by Stago at Whitgift.
Jake Philips is back at the club after a spell in Exeter while England Under-18 Kaden Dreysey joins the panel on a full-time basis having made his debut as a 17-year-old last year.
On the debit side, Ian Sloan moves to Old Georgians having been a club member since 2014, helping land league victories in 2015 and 2016. David Condon has made the same move while Jack Waller moved to Pinoké in the Hoofdklasse, making for three significant departures
