About Banbridge HC
Back-to-back Irish champions Banbridge bring a homegrown feel to their latest Euro Hockey League challenge as they search for a first knockout win in the competition.
They have, however, previously eliminated their KO16 opponent Royal Léopold back in 2016 when their draw in Banbridge saw the Irish club advance from ROUND1 and there are seven of that side still around.
The side is coached by Scott McCandless who has been part of the club for the past 30 years, playing in the EHL in 2011.
Key players are Peter Brown and Johnny McKee who played at the Paris Olympics while six of the squad also competed at this year’s Under-21 European A division tournament in Spain. The majority of the squad are a product of Banbridge Academy who the club have very strong links with.
Luke Witherow is another who has been part of the Irish international panel for the past few years as are the Rowe twins Louis and Charlie. Along with brother Jake, they are continuing a proud sporting heritage with their mother, Sonya, going to the 1992 Olympic Games in three-day eventing while father Ken played tennis for Ireland.
That family element is seen also with the Brown brothers in the panel as well as Adam and Matthew McKee who are brothers but are no relation to Johnny McKee.
Bann know the Surbiton venue well having played preseason matches there in recent seasons, including in August this year.
Coach Scott McCandless says of the challenge ahead: “We are delighted to be playing in the EHL for a second successive season and a fifth time in total. While it comes very early in our domestic season, it is a great opportunity to test ourselves against the best teams in Europe and use it as a means of raising our own standards to try and maintain a place at the top table of European hockey.”
