Campo crowned Spanish men’s champions

Club de Campo were crowned the Spanish men’s 2023-24 MGS League Champion thanks to a 2-1 final win over regular season champions Real Club de Polo.

It means Campo will contest the EHL Men’s FINAL8 while Polo must compete first in the KO16 to try and earn a spot at next Easter’s festival.

Both were assured of European hockey in the wake of Saturday’s results with Polo easing by RS Tenis while Campo defeated Egara.

After a tight first quarter, the second was played at a much higher tempo with Polo having more of the ball but they fell behind to a ruthless Chefo Basterra shot from a corner in the 22nd minute.

Three minutes after half-time, Vicenç Ruiz tied the score for Polo but the joy was short-lived as Álvaro Iglesias took advantage of a commotion in the area.

The ball reached the Campo captain and he scored what would ultimately be the winning goal.

Polo had their chances to equalise, notably from a Xavi Lleonart penalty stroke but it hit the post and Campo were able to hold on for their win.

Reflecting on the win, Álvaro Iglesias said: “We faced a great team that dominated the game from start to finish. However, these finals are decided by details and we felt comfortable defending and been more successful than them.

“We have scored one more goal and that helps! Until now, our season had not been that good, but the format of this league allows you not to be better in the regular competition but to be able to win the title if you have a good weekend.

“I don’t know if it’s fair or not, but it is what it is!”
