Cardiff & Met completed a perfect season when they won the Welsh men’s championship final last Saturday with an 8-1 success over Swansea.
It added to their unique season which ended up yielding four different titles. The club occupies an interesting space where they compete in the English leagues where they landed a memorable promotion to the English Premier Division.
They added a Welsh national indoor title along with their EuroHockey Club Trophy success at Easter – making it back-to-back European titles for them.
In the final, they proved too strong for Swansea with John Bennett and Ieuan Davies scoring first half goals. Davies put them 3-0 up before Swansea pulled one back via Rhys Griffiths.
But two goals from Charlie Hunte, another from Bennett and efforts from Matthew George and Nicholas Morgan saw Cardiff well clear.
On the women’s side in Wales, Howardian LHC won the championship title for the first time since forming in 1986 following a shoot-out victory over Penarth.
Penarth took a third quarter lead through Millicent Bushnell but Katie Underwood replied with 18 minutes to go for a 1-1 scoreline at full-time.
In the shoot-out, Emma Winch got the winner in the fifth round for a 4-3 success to earn them the title.
