Cardiff & Met win men’s Trophy II in vibrant style

Cardiff & Met picked up the top EHL ranking points on offer for Wales from last weekend’s men’s EuroHockey Club Trophy II in Switzerland.

They advanced to the final as group winners with a 5-2 win over hosts Servette and then beat Slavia Prague 5-1 in their second tie.

It put them through to the decider against Scotland’s Western Wildcats who topped the other pool with a 4-1 win over Slagelse and a 3-0 success against OSHVSM Phoenix.

They played out a vibrant final with 12 goals. Cardiff hit the first two in the first four minutes courtesy of Jolyon Morgan and Jack Pritchard and they were 4-0 up when Morgan got his second in addition to one from Owain Dolan-Gray.

Andrew McConnell – with the first of a hat trick of goals – did give them a lifeline before half-time and then added a second in the 31st minute to cut the deficit to 4-2.

But a three goal blitz toward the end of the third quarter from Morgan, James Tyson and Patrick McDowell effectively killed the tie. Ioan Wall added another before Western scored two in the last few minutes.

It means Cardiff earned Wales 8 points for the EHL ranking table, Scotland get 7 points for their runners-up spot. Switzerland picked up 6 via Servette; Denmark got 5 thanks to Slagelse while Ukraine pick up 4 due to OSHVSM Phoeniex and the Czech Republic took 3 for Slavla Prague’s sixth placed finish.

The updated EHL Ranking Tables – which determine the entry list for next season’s EHL – will be published in the coming week.
