Egara delight home fans with epic men’s EHL Cup final win over Mannheim

Club Egara delighted their home fans as they landed the men’s ABN AMRO EHL Cup at Pla del Bon Aire with a thrilling 4-3 win over Mannheimer HC in the final.

It was a rollercoaster from the beginning with Marc Recasens opening the scoring just four minutes in from a corner, a move countered by Gonzalo Peillat soon after. Xavi Aguilar made it 2-1 with just eight minutes on the clock as the frantic start continued.

It remained that way until the second half when Recasens added his next goal but efforts from Teo Hinrichs and Raphael Hartkopf made for an incredibly tense finish.

But, with two minutes on the clock, Recasens weighed in once more with another corner goal – his sixth of the weekend – to send the home fans into ecstasy. Mannheim had one last corner in the closing moments but Egara charged it down to kickstart the celebrations all over again.

Winning captain Josep Lluis Novell said the feeling was: “Amazing, especially in front of this crowd here. To be honest, we felt that we started the game with a 1-0 lead!”

Mannheimer’s Head Coach, Andreu Enrich felt that the difference between the clubs today was: “the energy that Egara brought to the game, and how they responded to the amazing home support.”

On preparing his team for this battle he added: “I said to my guys that they are going to bring a lot of energy, and play with their heart. Our preparation was focused on doing it in a German way, so we focused on that and controlling the possession.

But in the end, they did an amazing job, especially against our penalty corners!”

The Waterloo Ducks finished in third place with a 5-1 win over HC Rotterdam, scoring four times in the first 10 minutes with two from William Ghislain and one each from Loïc Sidler and Nicolas Dumont.

Hampstead & Westminster completed their dramatic weekend with a 7-1 win over Three Rock Rovers to take fifth place and Scotland’s Grange recorded their first ever EHL win, a 3-0 success against Post SV.
