Racing claim top honours at Euro indoors in Croatia

Racing Club de Bruxelles produced a near perfect performance to earn promotion to the top tier of European club indoor competition following their performances in Croatia last weekend, winning the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy.

They swept to wins over HC Minsk (Belarus), HK Zelina (Croatia) and Bohemians (Czech Republic) in the initial group stages, scoring 18 times and conceding just twice.

It put them through to the winners Pool C where they encountered their sole road-block in the form of Switzerland’s Rotweiss Wettingen. They drew 2-2 with Thibault Cornillie and Cedric Charlier scoring, countered by a late equaliser from Raphael Brunner.

With Wettingen defeated Minsk 1-0, it left Racing needing a win over Denmark’s Slagelse to top the competition on goal difference.

The Danes took an early lead and also had a 2-1 advantage by the 10th minute. But then Tom Boon – the tournament’s top scorer with 12 – hit form, netting three times between the 13th and 26th minute as Racing went 5-2 ahead.

He added another for good measure while Julian Zlig nabbed his second to stay clear in a 7-5 success. In addition to Boon’s top scorer title, Jeremy Gucassoff was crowned "Best Goalkeeper" in the competition.

They give Belgium a place in the top level along with Switzerland after Wettingen finished in second on goal difference.
